The WALDECK Peterborough Phantoms bounced back from Saturday night’s defeat to split the weekend’s results against the Hull Seahawks.
Phantoms were again without the services of Austin Mitchell-King, Billy Thorpe, Zaine McKenzie, Duncan Speirs and Janne Laakkonen, meaning their role players were to be given the opportunity to step into higher roles.
They started brightly in the opening five minutes and went close to the opener when Nathan Salem played a cross crease pass on his backhand to the tape of Cam Hough, but his shot went just wide.
And it was the visitors who took the lead when they broke 2-on-1 shorthanded and Lee Bonner played his pass across to Jason Hewitt, who one timed his shot beyond Hayden Lavigne.
They doubled their lead with 13:10 on the clock, when Jamie Chilcott followed the play in to convert on the rebound, after Lavigne had saved Owen Bruton’s initial effort.
But momentum shifted as the period wore on and Phantoms grabbed a goal back through captain Luke Ferrara, who took a lovely pass from Salem to beat Dmitri Zimozdra at his near post.
And 14 seconds later, they were back on level terms, after Jasper Foster danced in through the right circle and lifted his backhand shot into the top corner of the Hull net.
The turnaround was complete for a short time at least, at 27:50, when Jarvis Hunt notched a Phantoms powerplay goal.
But the Seahawks hit back a couple of minutes later through Bobby Chamberlain.
Ferrara sent Phantoms into the second intermission with the lead, though, when he took a nice cross crease pass from Hough to tally Phantoms’ second powerplay goal of the night.
And early in the third, Phantoms doubled their advantage with another goal of real quality from their third line. It came when Richard Hartmann raced through on goal and dropped a brilliant pass back onto the stick of Foster, who found the bottom corner for his second goal of the game.
The rest of the third period didn’t feature too many high quality scoring chances for either side, as Phantoms confidently held on for the two points.
