The WALDECK Peterborough Phantoms were narrowly beaten in overtime by the Hull Seahawks at Planet Ice Peterborough.

The game started at speed and it quickly saw its first penalty, when Seahawks import Emil Sven was assessed two for hooking.

Unfortunately for Phantoms, their man advantage lasted just ten seconds, as Jarvis Hunt was called for high sticking.

And in the resulting 4-on-4, the Seahawks took the lead when a shot from the blue line was kicked out by Hayden Lavigne into the path of Owen Sobchak, who took a touch to the side and tapped the puck into the empty net.

Phantoms got straight back on the offensive, though, with Richard Hartmann and Austin Mitchell-King going close to a quickfire leveller.

They did eventually draw level at 11:15 when Cam Hough skated the puck out in front from behind the goal and after his first shot was kicked back to him, he converted the rebound. The goal was discussed between referee Will Hewitt and the goal judge, but after deliberation, the goal did stand.

And Phantoms hit the front just 23 seconds later when Mitchell-King arrived late into the play to dispatch his shot past Jordan McLaughlin from in close.

Hull tied the game again seconds later when Owen Burton scored a rebound after Alex Kent’s initial effort was saved.

But Phantoms went ahead again 25 seconds later when Luke Ferrara won the puck back on his defensive blue line, skated it through the middle and pulled a move on McLaughlin before tapping into the unguarded net.

They made it 4-2 on 15:30 when Hough redirected a Ferrara one timer on the powerplay.

The sides went in with one goal separating them, though, as Johnny Cornell potted past a falling Lavigne. Phantoms felt they had a case for goalie interference, but the goal stood.

Mitchell-King went in search of his second of the night early in the second period when he dispossessed Declan Balmer and raced in, but McLaughlin was equal to his latest effort.

And the Seahawks tied the game once again when Cornell produced a nice move in the right circle and centred for Jamie Chilcott to smash in from out in front.

The Seahawks took confidence from their latest equaliser and pressed to take the lead, with Bruton and Cornell seeing efforts well saved.

Lee Bonner then had two good chances for the away side, the first was well saved by Lavigne and the second expertly cut out by Callum Buglass.

But Phantoms took another lead into the second intermission when Ferrara put the jets on once again, skating the puck from the defensive zone, over the blue line, and firing past an unsighted McLaughlin to make it 5-4.

The Seahawks were put on the powerplay at the end of the second period, though, and capitalised in the opening minutes of the third. Corneil finding the net again after he’d cut in from the right circle to lift his shot into the top corner.

The sides both had spells of pressure as the third period wore on and multiple penalties were called, but neither side found a way through and the game headed into overtime.

It was an evenly contested overtime period until Brad Bowering was called for boarding, allowing Emil Svec to fire home a one timer to ensure the Seahawks took the extra point.
