The WALDECK Peterborough Phantoms were comfortable winners over the Telford Tigers on Wednesday night.
January’s Player of the Month, Cam Hough, got the scoring started when Phantoms picked up a turnover on the Tigers’ defensive blue line, allowing the Canadian forward to skate in and rip past Brad Day.
They made it two when captain Luke Ferrara danced around two Tigers’ defencemen and lifted his backhand shot into the top corner of the net.
Hough added his second and Phantoms’ third in the final minute of the first period, when a blue line shot deflected out to him in the left circle and he squeezed the puck home from a tight angle.
And they picked up where they left off after the intermission as Nathan Salem won the puck back from the Tigers’ defenceman and ripped his shot bar down from the left circle.
Tigers got on the board when import forward David Thomson found the back of the net with a good finish from to the left of goal.
But Salem then grabbed his second and Phantoms’ fifth of the night, capitalising on a brilliant Phantoms powerplay and a saved Ferrara shot, to tap home from close range.
Ferrara added his second two minutes later when he benefitted from a close range tap in after Hough’s initial effort was blocked straight into his path.
Telford hit back again when Thomson picked up his second of the night, a lovely finish from the right circle which found the far corner via the crossbar.
But Phantoms were firing on all cylinders and notched their seventh when Salem played a great pass across the crease for Zaine McKenzie to convert from close range.
It took Phantoms just a minute and 27 seconds to find the net in the third period as Janne Laakkonen added his name to the scoresheet with a tidy finish on the back post.
Phantoms’ eighth goal spelt the end of the night for Tigers goalie Brad Day, who was replaced by Matthew Byrne.
Unfortunately for Byrne, his first major action was to pick the puck out of his net after Ferrara rifled home his hat-trick goal with an unstoppable shot from the blue line.
Luke Clark replaced Hayden Lavigne in the Phantoms net at the time of their ninth goal.
And Slava’s side made it ten with just over fourteen minutes to play, when Ferrara scored his fourth of the night, this time finding space in the right circle to beat Byrne at his near post.
The Tigers added their third and final goal of the game at 48:10 when Rhodes Mitchell-King fired through traffic on the powerplay.
But Phantoms hit straight back again as Laakkonen found his second of the night from in close to make it 11-3 in favour of the Phantoms.
The scoring was rounded off when Austin Mitchell-King found the bottom corner from the left circle.
