We caught up with Canadian forward, Cam Hough, about a regular season which saw him score an impressive 54 goals, and looked ahead to the playoffs!
A multiple award winner at the Phantoms’ awards night, Cam has become a real favourite amongst Phantoms fans and a player which every other team fears coming up against.
Cam made his first European move last season when he signed for Tours in France, and has had a brilliant season as part of the WALDECK Peterborough Phantoms this term - a season he’s enjoyed.
“I have found British hockey quite enjoyable, to me it is a mix between North American hockey & European hockey, drawing in a bit of both styles. This season has been great, I think we have a really tight group of guys here on this team, so it’s been great not just on the ice but off the ice as well.” Cam said.
Cam admits he wasn’t sure what to expect from British hockey, but has successfully hit his 50 goal target for the season, finishing on 92 points for the regular season.
“I wasn’t quite sure what to expect coming in, I set a goal for myself at the start of the season to reach that 50 goal mark. When I have line mates like Janne & Luke it makes my job a lot easier! I’ve been happy with what I’ve been able to accomplish this season!” Cam said.
This weekend sees the start of the 2024/25 NIHL National playoffs, where the Phantoms will contest a group with the Leeds Knights, Hull Seahawks and Telford Tigers.
As a new player to the league, it will be Cam’s first experience of the playoffs, an experience he’s very much looking forward to!
Hough said: “I’ve spoken with quite a few guys on the team about it & have heard how unbelievable the Coventry experience is. Playoff hockey is way different than the regular season in any league you play in & it’s going to be some high intensity do or die hockey which I’m very excited for!”
And when asked if Cam thought this Phantoms team have what it takes to go all the way and retain their crown, he said: “I absolutely do, we have proved this year that we can beat any team! When we have our full line-up I think we are a hard team to play against! We just need to stay focused & be consistent for playoffs coming up, which I think we have done the last couple weeks leading up to it!”
Coventry weekend is the pinnacle of any teams’ season, with all eight qualified teams battling hard for their spot at the show. Cam believes that the experience from the remaining players’ from last season’s roster can play a big part in helping Phantoms book their spot in the Final Four.
“We are very determined to make it there, we have a lot of guys on the team from last year that had the pleasure of winning Coventry last season & know what it takes to get there! I’m very excited for a chance to repeat last seasons success!” said Hough.
And Cam had the following message to the Phantoms fans, ahead of the opening weekend of the playoffs.
“Not just me but our whole team always appreciates the support from all our fans! There is nothing better than skating onto the ice in a loud, fully packed arena especially come playoff time! So we are excited & thankful for you all to join us on playoff run back to Coventry this season!” Cam concluded.
Come and see Cam and his teammates in playoff action this Sunday, when we host the Hull Seahawks at Planet Ice Peterborough! You can book your tickets HERE!
