We’d like to say a huge thank you to all of our volunteers for their hard work throughout the 2019/20 season, with special mention to those who have stepped down from their roles after the premature end to the season.

The first of those is Irene Amos. Irene was a regular fixture on the timekeepers’ bench for many years, filling out the sheet and worked closely with Cliff Smith, Alan Downie and Aaron Shortland to ensure the smooth running of the timekeepers bench each weekend. Irene has headed up the team of off-ice officials since 1996, but has dedicated herself to Peterborough Hockey for a lot longer than that, being a parent of players and of course a dedicated fan of our club.

Next is John Walsham. John has been a steward on match nights for a number of years. He could usually be found welcoming the away teams to the rink, showing them to their locker room and assisting with any enquiries they had upon arrival. John has shown real commitment to his voluntary position, even when hospitalised or had no transport he would always be on the phone making sure we were aware and trying ever which way to make it to the game. He was always welcoming to the opposition we’re sure they will all notice the gap of John’s presence on match nights.

Derek Mabe will also be stepping down from his role as the goal judge at the café end of Planet Ice Peterborough. Derek has been the goal judge at that end of the rink for many years and has lit the lamp for thousands of goals. Derek rarely misses a game and dedicates himself to not only the first team but Phantoms 2 also. Derek and his family have been die hard Phantoms fans friends for as long as many of us can remember.

Tom and Diane Scott will also be leaving the match night team. Tom was the club’s official photographer, snapping the action from between the benches. Tom has dedicated many hours at the rink and even more in editing all the pictures afterwards. In the early days Tom formed part of the massive ‘Animal Corner’ following before taking up photography and turning his hand to travelling the country to shoot games for the much-loved ice hockey magazine, PowerPlay, before becoming the Official Photographer for the Phantoms, Phantoms 2 and junior hockey. Diane also started her volunteer days selling PowerPlay on match nights, as the Phantoms programme was wrapped around the outside of the magazine. After PowerPlay folded, Diane was not content with sitting back, she was eager to help where she could. So once HockeyDog opened its doors, she became the known face behind the desk of HD on match nights, assisting with sales of Phantoms merchandise to our loyal fan base.

The final member of our match night team who will be departing is Emily Woods. Emily worked Monday to Friday in the Phantoms office as our Marketing and Communications Co-Ordinator and worked tirelessly on match nights to ensure the smooth running of everything behind the scenes. Emily has been a huge character both in the office and around the rink for the past three years and will undoubtedly be missed by everyone who has encountered her. We’d like to thank Emily for all of her hard work and wish her all the very best as she moves onto pastures new for the next stage of her career – a career we have no doubt will be a hugely successful one.

We’re extremely appreciative to all of our volunteers for the work they do for the club and we’re looking forward to seeing most of you back next season. Those who have stepped down, we look forward to seeing you back as fans of the club!

Thank you to all of you, match nights wouldn’t be possible without you.
