Biography
Joe re-signed for the Peterborough Phantoms in July 2022.
He came through the youth system in Nottingham, icing for the Cougars at U16 level, before moving onto the Nottingham Leopards for U18 and U20 hockey, where he captained his side, whilst also playing for the Nottingham Lions.
He headed to North America in 2017/18 for a short spell with the Northumberland Stars of the GMHL, notching a goal and four assists in ten games. His last Lions season was in 2018/19, where he acted as an alternate captain for his local NIHL1 side.
The following year, Gretton arrived in Peterborough, and after impressing during pre-season, signed a two-way with the senior Phantoms side. He quickly became a favourite amongst the fans and is now one of the most popular figures in the Peterborough Hockey scene, on and off the ice.
Slava said: “Gretz is a great guy and exactly the kind of character we want in our locker room. He’s shown improvement across the board in his game since he joined us and his willingness to play in any role, with his versatility, has been a real help for us. He can play forward or defence, and we used him on our special teams at times last season too. I’m really happy to have him back and I’m looking forward to seeing him again soon!”
And Gretton was keen to share his delight at his re-signing: “After how the playoffs ended last year it definitely feels like we have unfinished business and I can’t wait to get going again and see the boys in August. The team is looking really strong and I know if we carry on how we finished the year we will make some serious noise this season. There’s only one team I want to play for in this league and I can’t wait to be back at paradise Peterborough on the 3rd of September and see the best fans in the league again!”
