PHANTOMS SUFFER FIRST PRE-SEASON DEFEAT

PHANTOMS SUFFER FIRST PRE-SEASON DEFEAT

Peterborough Phantoms 3–4 Hull Pirates (AOT)

The Peterborough DALROD Phantoms suffered their first defeat of the pre-season with an overtime loss to the Hull Pirates. Corey McEwen and Glenn Billing brought the Phantoms back into contention with third period goals, but Bobby Chamberlain netted the winner with a minute and a half to play in OT.

Hull took the lead with a short-handed goal through former Phantom Matty Davies, who went to the back hand and found the net, after a clever pass from Peter Fabus.

And the lead was doubled through player coach Jason Hewitt, who found space out in front and left Jordan Marr with no chance.

The Pirates continued to hold the upper hand as the opening period progressed, with Marr making a string of smart saves to keep the score at 2-0 as we reached the first intermission.

An energetic shift from the lively Jarvis Hunt then sparked the Phantoms into life. Chamberlain took exception to the young Phantoms forward and Robbie Ferrara stuck up for the 17-year-old. Both Ferrara and Chamberlain received 2+2 for fighting.

Nathan Long brought the Phantoms to within one goal with a blue line slap shot which deflected up and over the shoulder of Ash Smith in the Pirates net.

Davies then turned provider for Fabus to extend the Pirates lead back to two goals moments later, Fabus found time and space to fire his wrist shot beyond Marr and into the net.

McEwen netted the first goal of the third period with a fantastic solo effort, after a good play from Joe Gretton, to set up a thrilling final frame.

Billing then had a golden chance to level the scores after good work from Ales Padelek, but the Pirates defence managed to keep it out of the net.

And after a number of chances, Billing did pull the Phantoms level, capitalising on a rebound from Padelek’s shot to send the game to overtime.

Pirates claimed the victory when Chamberlain skated around the goal and squeezed it past Marr and into the net.
