Hull Pirates 2-4 Peterborough Phantoms
A Corey McEwen hat-trick sent the Phantoms on their way to a first leg win over the Hull Pirates in the National Cup Semi-Final.
McEwen put the Phantoms ahead after exchanging passes with Martins Susters, before calmly slotting the puck home from out in front of goal.
The advantage was doubled by Glenn Billing, who got himself in the right place at the right time in front of goal, before dispatching the puck past Ash Smith.
And the third goal quickly followed, 21 seconds later, as McEwen struck his second of the night to put the Phantoms three goals ahead.
Matt Bissonnette got the Pirates on the board late in the period, capitalising on a rebound after Bobby Chamberlain’s initial effort.
The first main action of the second period was a fight. Stepanek and Chamberlain tangled behind the Pirates net, with Stepanek receiving 2+2 for fighting and Chamberlain 2+2 for fighting and a further 2 for roughing.
Bissonnette put the Pirates within one after the puck bobbled in his favour in front of Jordan Marr, allowing the Pirates #73 to poke the puck into the back of the net.
McEwen sealed his hat-trick with 7:55 to play in the third, on the powerplay. After good puck cycling from the Phantoms, Pirates goalie Smith was caught in no man’s land, and McEwen was on hand to send the puck into the partially unguarded net.
It was a battling performance from every guy on the Phantoms roster from start to finish. They got down to block shots throughout the game and eventually came away with a deserved win from the first leg of the semi-final.
