MATCH REPORT | McEWEN AND PADELEK SEAL PENALTY SHOT WIN FOR THE PHANTOMS

Basingstoke Bison 3–4 Peterborough Phantoms (After penalty shots)

Phantoms kicked the weekend off with a penalty shot win over the Basingstoke Bison.

Adam Harding opened the scoring for the Bison after 2:52. Alex Sampford won the battle in the corner and centred for the former Swindon Wildcat to put the Bison ahead from the top of the crease.

Phantoms almost had an equaliser when Tom Ralph was caught high and Glenn Billing got in close to net; Billing went five hole on Alex Mettam, but the Bison goalie shut the door and made the save.

Phantoms levelled the scores early in the second period with a powerplay marker. The SMS line went to work as Corey McEwen found Petr Stepanek, who fired home from the blue line.

The go-ahead goal came with 2:22 to play in the second period with the SMS line again on the scoresheet. This time, it was Martins Susters who found the back of the net. McEwen’s initial shot was saved, but #77 was on hand to tuck the rebound into the goal.

And McEwen struck early in the third to ensure all members of the SMS line would come away from Basingstoke with a goal to their name. Ales Padelek and Susters picked up the assists as they worked the chance for McEwen to lift the puck past the sprawling goalie.

But Richard Bordowski began the comeback for the Bison, tapping home a rebound on the powerplay after Jordan Marr’s initial save.

Ashley Tait levelled the scores in the closing moments, stabbing the puck home from a tight angle to put a short-handed marker on the board for the Bison. Tait’s goal proved to be the final goal of regulation and the game headed into overtime.

There were no further goals in OT, so the game went to penalty shots.
