The Peterborough DALROD Phantoms are back in action on home ice on Saturday (7thSeptember) at 7pm, when the Hull Pirates come to town. The Phantoms then travel to Hull on Sunday evening for a reverse of Saturday night’s fixture.

Both sides won trebles last year, with the Phantoms winning the Autumn Cup, South Cup and South Playoffs. Hull, meanwhile, won the NIHL North, North Playoffs and NIHL Final Four. This weekend will be Hull’s first two matches of pre-season, whilst the Phantoms began their preparations on Wednesday, with a 16-0 victory over MK Thunder.

Slava Koulikov once again has a full roster of players available for the weekend. Goalie Jordan Marr is expected to return to the line-up, after Ryan Bainborough and Luke Clark shared a shut out on Wednesday evening.

Defenceman Joe Gretton could also get more minutes for the Phantoms, following his goal and man of the match performance on Wednesday against the Thunder. Martins Susters, Corey McEwen and Petr Stepanek are all available and will be looking to continue their form from mid-week, with Susters scoring six and McEwen once. Stepanek collected five assists.

Jason Hewitt is likely to have a full complement of players available to him for the weekend. They currently have three former Phantoms on their roster: Tom Stubley, Sam Towner and Matty Davies, whilst James Archer departed Hull to join the newly formed Leeds Chiefs for the 2019/20 season.

Hewitt has lost the services of prolific import forward Sonny Karlsson, who scored 94 points in just 32 games for the Pirates last season. He has been replaced by Slovakian forward Peter Fabus, who scored over a point per game in the Polish league last term. The Pirates are also expected to have new import Olegs Sislannikovs available, following his arrival in the country on Thursday evening.

“Hull will be the perfect pre-season test for the guys. After the exhibition game on Wednesday I feel it will be a tougher test against last season’s playoff winners. Hull have kept the main core of guys

from last year and strengthened with some new imports, so it will be the perfect step up in preparation for the guys moving into the new season.

As each period passes preseason, the guys will start to find their feet more and re-discover a lot of the chemistry which bought us success last year. We have told them it’s important to pay attention to the fundamentals in these games, like puck possession, timing, small details and good habits which will help when the league starts.

This season is going to be tough all year, and a lot of the games will be big games, so it’s important to start with the right mentality in these games and carry that through to the next weekend and into the season.”

Jason Hewitt replaced Dominic Osman as the Head Coach of the Hull Pirates in February 2017 and has been the player coach ever since. Before Hull, he spent the majority of his career in the Elite League with the Sheffield Steelers and has also played a number of games for Great Britain. He amassed over 150 points last season in the most productive point scoring year of his career so far.
