HULL PIRATES – WEEKEND PREVIEW

HULL PIRATES – WEEKEND PREVIEW

This weekend sees the Phantoms take on the Hull Pirates in a double header. Phantoms are at home on Saturday (7pm) before travelling to Hull on Sunday (5:30pm).

Pirates started with three wins, before losing their following four. Last week they completed a four point weekend, moving up to sixth position in the process.

TEAM NEWS

Phantoms will be without Nathan Pollard on Saturday night due to personal commitments, but the forward will return on Sunday when the Phantoms travel to Hull. Jarvis Hunt will miss the weekend through injury, whilst Corey McEwen could return to the Phantoms line up.

Joe Gretton is available after signing his two-way contract this week and is likely to feature for the Phantoms once again.

Hull were without the services of captain Jamie Chilcott and forward Matty Davies last weekend, and it is not yet known whether either will feature against the Phantoms this week. Jason Hewitt didn’t play on Sunday night, and there has been no confirmation whether he’ll be fit to face the Phantoms this weekend.

Pirates released import forward Olegs Sislannikovs from his contract this week and replaced him with Canadian forward David Norris. The former MKL forward has arrived in the country but it remains to be seen whether he’ll be in the Pirates line up to take on the Phantoms.

SLAVA SAYS

Hull are on 10 points with a game in hand on four of the five teams above them. They had a couple of weekends where they didn’t pick up any points but look at last weekend when they went to Bison short benched and beat them, and then beat Leeds. You don’t expect them to roll over and the way they play is why they score so many goals. Offence starts in defence with how they move the puck and they’re known around the league for that, so we’re expecting two very tough games.

I liked our pre-season schedule. We played against two really good teams. But I don’t think those scores will reflect what will happen at the weekend. Both teams have progressed since then and I don’t look at those games as a mark. They were just really good pre-season games and it’ll be totally different scenario this weekend. We played them three times last year including at Coventry. The first game was decided on penalty shots, second was a one goal game and the third went to OT. It’ll be a game of fine margins, small details, executing them right not giving them anything extra on top of what they’ll create. We need everyone to give 110% every time they step on the ice.

There are no easy games, but this is a big game because both teams want to fight and progress in the table. We know they had a short bench last week, but we don’t know how long their guys will be out, so we have to plan as if they’ll have a full-strength team and that’s probably the best way to prepare.

THE OPPOSITION BENCH

Jason Hewitt brings a wealth of experience to the Hull Pirates. The 36 year old played most of his career in the Elite League, and has also iced numerous times for Great Britain. He was named in the NIHL1 North All Star Team last season.
