BILLING TAKES THE POSITIVES FROM COMPETITIVE WEEKEND OF FIXTURES

Phantoms forward Glenn Billing, sponsored by Ye Olde Abbey, is keen to take the positives from the weekend’s fixtures after two overtime losses against the Hull Pirates. Both games were extremely competitive, and Billing feels it was the perfect test for the Phantoms at this stage of pre-season.

“This weekend was a great test for us, although we didn’t get the results we wanted, it was good to get the rust off after a long summer and there were plenty of positives. Obviously, there’s stuff to work on and we’ll reflect and work in training on these things, so we keep improving and make sure we’re ready to go this weekend and start the season flying the following week!” Billing said.

The Pirates, like the Phantoms, won a treble last year, winning the NIHL North, North Playoffs and National Playoffs. With the new NIHL National season drawing ever closer, Billing believes the Phantoms are heading in the right direction and is hopeful of another successful season.

“They’re a good team with a lot of offensive threats, so it was good to see how we measured up at this early stage. I think the main thing we learnt is that every night is going to be competitive this year and every game we need to be ready to battle from the first puck drop because we can’t be chasing games all year! I think we started much better on Sunday, but we need a complete 60-minute performance every night as the level has been raised again this year and every night is going to be a tough game which we’re looking forward to embracing! If we bear down on chances and compete for 60 minutes every night, we’ll end up on the right side of results more often than not. But it will come, it’s pre-season and these things will be ironed and out and we’ll be ready to go come the first game of the season!” said Billing.

Billing has six goals in three games so far in the pre-season and is looking to continue his form into the 2019/20 NIHL National League campaign.

“I feel good, I worked hard in the summer to be ready physically and I’m excited to be back! I’ve been fortunate to score a few goals which has been good, but I’m not content, I know I can produce a lot more and do whatever is required to help the team to be successful and win some more trophies, that’s the most important goal going into the season. Myself and my teammates will do anything again to do that! So, all in all, I’m extremely excited to be back and raring to go again.” Billing said.

Billing was a big part of a formidable top forward line for the Phantoms last season, with Glenn, James Ferrara and Ales Padelek all averaging well over a point per game as the Phantoms won three trophies in 2018/19.

“I love playing with Jimmy and Padi, they’re both very experienced and amazing players and make it very easy out there for me and make me look good! I loved playing with them both last year and I learnt a lot from them, which I will continue to do this year by soaking up all advice given to me to continue to develop my game! We seem to have found a nice chemistry and hopefully we can continue the success we had last year to help the team win hockey games and championships this year!” Said Billing.

Up next for the Phantoms is a double header against the Basingstoke Bison, in the Billy Glover Memorial Trophy. Phantoms travel to Basingstoke on Saturday, before welcoming the Bison to Planet Ice Peterborough on Sunday, for a 5:30pm face off.

“This weekend will be another great test for us, we know what Basingstoke will bring and that’s relentless effort and a very direct game. We will have a great week of training on the things we have identified from the weekend just gone and prepare for a tough weekend and hopefully produce two good performances and two wins as our great fans deserve it! We want to win every game whether it’s a pre-season game or regular season game. We have the same mindset, winning is the goal. So hopefully we can produce and keep developing as a team to make sure we’re ready come that first game to have another successful season and win some trophies!”

“Thank you for all the support, be loud! be proud! and I look forward to seeing you all there!” Billing said.
